Suus Jacket & D3O® please explain

When developing and designing our new leather motorcycle jacket the basic brief was to produce a jacket that would look great on the bike as well as off the bike. One of the major items that had to be addressed was impact protection.

As we all know jackets made of a high quality leather have good abrasion resistance and offer excellent protection however protection from impact is wanting. So after much research we opted for the D3O® impact armour for back, elbows and shoulders with in the jacket.

D3O® is one of the most exciting innovations in protective gear in the last decade. First used at the 2006 Winter Olympics now appears in select high quality motorcycle gear worldwide.

So let me explain how D3O® works and how it is far superior to generic moulded plastic and silicone armour.

It is really simple, even if I have no idea how it actually does what it does. The active ingredient is actually a liquid, set into foam that remains pliable. In its raw state the liquid flows freely when moved slowly, but on impact, it locks together to absorb and disperse energy, before instantly returning to a flexible state. This reaction is countered intuitive. The greater the force of the impact, the more the molecules lock together and the greater the protection. Because it can spread impact forces across a large area, it can afford to be thinner, absorbing the same amount of energy in a slimmer package than traditional armour or more energy if its the same size. The actual chemical makeup and science stuff is locked in a vault, it's a secret.
